You Сan Make Your Work Environment Stress-Free in 9 Steps
Do you feel comfortable in your work environment? We’re not talking about your daily assignments, tasks and other work endeavors, but the physical environment instead.
Perhaps, your co-workers are too noisy or your work desk is way too messy. Maybe your boss doesn’t give you even an inch of free room, you hate the lighting in your office, or your computer is way too old and loading Excel takes forever. In other words, whatever it is, there’s a huge chance it’s influencing your effectiveness as well as attitude.
We’ve made a list of 9 simple tips that will help you de-stress your work environment.
Tip #1. Adding Personal Touch Helps a Lot
Consider adding some personal items that carry some special meaning to your desk. This may include books, a table lamp, inspiring painting or a decorative item of your favorite color combination.
Tip #2. Make Sure Your Work Desk Is in Order and Clean
It’s necessary to keep your workplace in proper order. The moment you get rid of the mess, you will start feeling more comfortable, because mess causes stress. Many can’t focus when their desk is crowded with business cards, newsletters, papers, and other debris. This disorder causes a constant psychological pressure on the person about the things that are unfinished or have been forgotten.
So, it’s critical to have everything in order. It could be a great idea to get an organization system that would help you accomplish and maintain this in the long run.
Tip #3. Don’t Get Distracted by Interruptions
Maybe there’s a co-worker that always stops by when you’re in the middle of something and starts discussing last night’s football game. Or maybe your desk is placed right next to that old noisy HVAC unit. Even a large office window could be a major distraction. Once you try and learn to handle such disturbances or ignore them in your workplace, your stress levels can drop dramatically.
Tip #4. Be Flexible
Are you worried about changes? You will need to quickly get used to changes, such as serious reshuffling of the office, installation of new software, etc. Change is usually good, so there’s no need to stress about it.
Tip #5. Got Plants?
Adding plants to your workplace is not only a good decorative decision, but as well has been shown to reduce stress, increase positive emotions, lower humidity and room temperature, reduce noise levels, and even decrease blood pressure.
Tip #6. Improve Your Communication Skills
Bad communication is often a cause of confusion that, in turn, results in stress. In case people around you don’t communicate well, try asking questions, making suggestions, and doing whatever else you can to change the current state of things.
On the other hand, if you are feeling too stressed because of a colleague that talks loudly on the phone or because of always being looked over your shoulder by your boss, try finding a way of communicating your concerns and frustration in a friendly yet effective manner. They could be willing to change their actions, if they know they’re causing unnecessary stress.
Tip #7. Include Relaxation Exercises into Your Routine
This one depends on whether you’re allowed to do certain things on your workplace or not. Playing soft music, making occasional stretches or taking a short walk will allow you to relax, if not get rid of everything that causes stress. It is very important to get up from your seat from time to time, may be even going outside the office to get some fresh air and give your eyes a rest from looking to the computer too much.
Tip #8. Consider Changing Your Office’s Layout
One of the best ideas here would be placing your desk area in the command position, using the old Chinese art of reshuffling, in order to be able to see everyone, who enters the room. In case you’re in a cubicle position and can’t do that, consider placing a small mirror in such a spot that you would be able to see the entrance to your premise behind your back. Also, if you perform multiple tasks, a swivel chair, L-shaped table or desk would also be a good stress-reducing addition.
Tip #9. Renovate Your Workplace
It may be not as obvious, but such things, like lighting, décor, and colors can actually be stress factors. If possible, consider changing the color of walls in your office. According to various studies, neutral tones make a calming effect; yellow tones induce intellectual activity; earth tones promote warmth; whereas green and blue tones cause a more resting effect.
Replace fluorescent lamps with softer lighting. The renovation can also include getting a better chair, desk, and such minutiae as glare screens.
Your work’s most important asset is you and the better you are protected from stressors, the more effective you are.
